The Perspective Collective grew from a lifelong fascination with meaningful words and concepts from cultures around the world. For years, I would come across ideas that stayed with me, sharing them with people simply because I found them fascinating and thought they might illuminate something familiar or reveal an entirely new way of looking at life.
At the beginning of 2025, I made a New Year's resolution to explore that fascination more intentionally. I began researching individual concepts, creating original visual work around them and writing reflections on the perspectives they offered. What started as a personal creative exploration gradually became a substantial and evolving body of work
The practice initially took shape as The Phrontistery Project. As the archive grew, so did my understanding of what I was creating. I began to see that the words themselves were only the beginning. What increasingly fascinated me was the cultural perspective each concept carried and what it could reveal about different ways of understanding and experiencing life.
As I began looking more closely across the growing archive, I noticed connections and recurring patterns between concepts. These naturally began to gather around broader themes of Inner Life and Becoming, Life with Others, and Wonder and the Living World. Seeing these relationships helped me understand the collection less as a series of individual concepts and more as a growing body of cultural perspectives in conversation with one another.
This evolution eventually led to the name The Perspective Collective, which better reflects what the practice had become.
As the archive has grown, so has the practice around it. The concepts now extend beyond the regular posts through which many people first encounter the work, appearing in exhibitions, immersive cultural learning experiences, public engagement and creative collaborations. Selected works are also available as prints, cards and tshirts, with publications and educational resources in development.
These different expressions of the practice create new ways for people to encounter and engage with the cultural perspectives held within the archive, whether individually or in conversation with others.
The Perspective Collective was founded by Urfan Ali, a cultural researcher, creative practitioner and strategic advisor with a longstanding interest in how people understand one another and how stronger, more compassionate communities can be built.
Across his work with communities, cultural organisations, social enterprises and public institutions, a recurring thread has been an interest in perspective: whose experiences are recognised, how different ways of seeing are brought into conversation, and what becomes possible when we become more curious about lives and experiences beyond our own. The Perspective Collective brings that continuing interest into my creative practice.
The Perspective Collective was known as The Phrontistery Project until 20 September 2026. Artwork and other materials created before this date may therefore carry the original name. These works remain part of The Perspective Collective archive and are integral to the history and development of the practice.
